Doyle Brunson, WSOP’s First Consecutive Winner

Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas on August 10, 1933, and with his 10th World Series of Poker bracelet in 2005, is tied with Johnny Chan.  He married his wife, Louise, in 1962 and had four children, one of whom, Todd Brunson, is a poker pro who won his own WSOP bracelet in 2005.

Brunson is the co-author of the “poker bible” Super System, the first major poker book put out by pros on how to play. A revised edition, Super System 2, came out in 2005. The first edition took the gambling world by storm and a lot of the pros were pretty upset as they considered Brunson to give away too much insider information.

Doyle Brunson has been a poker pro most of his life, and has only held a “regular” job once, for a couple of weeks. After college, he was a salesman for bookkeeping equipment, but quit when he saw his paycheck and realized he could make more in a single night of poker — or even a single poker pot.

“I’m a gambler. I’ll always be one. I couldn’t be anything else. So, my life will always be full of wins and losses. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s exciting. There’s never been a dull moment in my life.”

In 1976 the Texas Dolly won $220,000 and in 1977 he took home $340,000.  Not bad in those days and I think he would tend to agree. His career winnings is totaled at over $5,000,000.00
